OS XChat Tutorial [NonWindows Users]

Postby mioka on Wed Dec 30, 2009 6:31 pm

XChat is actually an IRC Client which is compatible with most of the common operating systems: Windows, Linux and Mac.

As far as I know, XChat is free for Linux users; but since I myself am not entirely familiar with XChat (I just made this tutorial so non-Windows users can use IRC), if anyone else can confirm that this client is free for Windows and Mac after 30days, please contact us asap (: It'll be very much appreciated!

Ochibichan-Scanlation's XChat Tutorial - Joining the Channel -
1) Go HERE to download and install XChat client.

2) After you've installed the program, open the client and you will get this:
Image
**Note: New users might not get this box first when they start up but instead gets the box in step 3, don't worry about it and just continue on (:

3) Next, under XChat Tab at the menu bar, press Network List (you can access it by using CTRL+S too) and you should get this box:
Image
Fill in the username boxes with different nicknames to prevent yourself from getting a GuestXXXX nick!
Then, at the Network box, press Add to add a new network. Label your new Network as IRCHighway.

4) After that, select IRCHighway and press Edit. You should get a box like this:
Image
Select the newserver/6667 and change it to irc.irchighway.net.
Leave the options below blank first, I'll explain how to fill in those blanks later (:

Then close the box and press Connect Image

5) Let the client load for a while until it suddenly spams your box with a bunch of messages and a new box will appear:
Image
Just type Ochibichan at the Join this channel option

OR

Close the box and type:
Code: Select all
/j #ochibichan

to join the channel later~
Image
Tadaaaa~ You've entered the channel! And you're ready to start leeching!

Note: If you happen to see NO ONE in the channel nor a colourful topic, try and check if you've connected to the right server or spelled #ochibichan right. One single typo can send you to a lost channel!

Ochibichan-Scanlation's XChat Tutorial - Leeching Manga -
Okay, so now you've entered the channel, the first thing to always do is check the TOPIC and the ENTRYMSG. If you check these two, you'll be able to get the releases in no time.
Image
NOTE: You might notice how awful the colour scheme is on XChat (especially the awful brown the orange has become). Don't worry, because you can change it! (More on that below).

Downloading
~Latest Releases~
1) If you're in the channel to download latest releases, READ THE TOPIC FIRST. We usually provide a direct trigger so everyone can get their chapters.

2) For example, the latest releases according to the channel topic are:
:18diary: !18d1 :Ayakashi: !atb1 :Dengeki: !dd17 :Kaiyori: !kai3 !kai4  !kis35 !kis36 :Sprout: !sp27

So lets say you want to get the latest chapter of 18Diary, just type !18d1 to get the chapter (:
NOTE: Sometimes we like to be asses, so we would purposely change the triggers to some sort of weird names like: !SASUNARU<3; but we will always state what series that is, so just read the topic carefully (;

3) Once you've typed that, a whole new box will pop up asking you where you would like to save your file. Choose whatever destination you want and press Accept. Your download should look like this:
Image
Once the download is 100%, you've gotten the chapter! Happy reading!

~Older Releases~
I won't be including a guide to download older releases from the bots or FServ tutorial, because you can find the tutorials for those here:

Fserv Download: Link

EXTRAS
Get a new nick!
If you happen to get this message when you log on to the server, quickly change your nick by typing /nick -newnick-! This is to prevent you from getting those annoying GuestXXXX nicks as some channels might ban you.

Register Your Nick
If your nickname isn't taken, and you would like to keep it for as long as possible, just type:
Code: Select all
/nickserv register password e-mail

Replace password with your desired one and e-mail with a valid e-mail. Follow the instructions like how you register an account for anything (forum, website etc) and your nick will be registered (:

Identify your nick
You can only identify your nick when you registered it. Example, you register with a nick NickNick123 and password 1234.
At the status window (safest place to type it), just type
Code: Select all
/identify 1234

and a message would appear stating that you're now identified:
Code: Select all
-NickServ- Password accepted - you are now recognized.

This is basically like logging into an account :)

Changing XChat Colour Scheme
Well, we know how hard it is to read the triggers at the topic due to painstaking default colours of XChat. Here's a way to make it easier for you.

1) At the menua bar, select Settings (alt+e) and choose Preferences.

2) A new box will appear:
Image
Just like in any art program, the colour alternating box will appear. So just change whatever colour you don't like to something suitable!

3) Press OK and you can now see the triggers better:
Image
NOTE: You can change anything to any colour you want (: But do note that if you change for example Brown to Light Beige, whenever you see a supposedly brown text, it'll be beige!

If there are any questions, feel free to ask (:

Things to take note of:
These incidents have been happening for quite a while now, I decided to add this section because some guy PMed me the other day and just quit, without waiting for my answer *facepalm*

1) Please wait for AT LEAST 15 minutes.
I know IRC can be confusing (especially if it's your first time), so it's common if you want to ask some questions in the channel/through PM. But please, if you do ask a question, wait for a few minutes. Do not just quit after a few seconds! Not all of us are super-typing-machines. Especially if your question is something that needs to be explained in detail. So at least wait 15 minutes for SOMEONE to respond before deciding to give up. While waiting for someone to respond, you can just look through the guide again- you might figure out where you're stuck at in the process too.

2) NEVER EVER ask when 'X' series will be released.
This is annoying and will definitely get you a kick ban.

3) We love it when someone says Thank you!
We really do! Even if the staff aren't around at that time, but just leaving a thank you message in the channel will warm our hearts when we scroll back up to read the logs (:

4) Don't be shy to start a conversation.
Feel free to start a random conversation in the channel. Someone is bound to respond, and if no one does, it just means everyone's busy or away. But like the saying goes 'Try, try again' (x

5) Hang around in the channel~
On normal days, we can't possibly break any peak. But idling in the channel while you're surfing the net wouldn't take up much memory (: You can engage in a conversation, play uno, befriend the staffers/idlers or even hear some 'top-secret-project-status' in the channel (; We might even hint when our next release is! Having a lively channel tends to give us a 'ego-boost' sometimes too (x
